Peter, who holds a B.A. in psychology from The University of Michigan, earned his black belt under our very own Richard Plowden and began competing at sport karate competitions nationally and abroad at the age of eight. In 2012, Peter represented the United States at the World Kickboxing Council Championships where he earned multiple medals including the world champion title. Along with his role at Kids Kicking Cancer, Peter is also the owner of his own martial arts studio, Core Fitness Martial Arts.

How many years have you worked with Kids Kicking Cancer?
15 years

How did you begin with martial arts?
My dad is a blackbelt in Hapkido and he and I would always wrestle and spar at home. After driving my mom crazy, we decided to look for a school to join. After checking out a couple of schools in my neighborhood, I joined Sensei Richard Plowden‘s school, and now he can’t get rid of me.

What lessons have you learned over the years from practicing or teaching martial arts?
The most important thing that I have learned is that anyone can practice martial arts. Many people give excuses as to why they cannot do martial arts, but the Heroes Circle is proof that there is no excuse!

What inspired you to join Kids Kicking Cancer as a martial arts therapist?
I have competed in martial arts since I was a child, and pushing past adversity was something I thought I understood. But when I saw how martial arts were used to help children get through the challenges of their treatments, I was amazed. The children inspired, motivated, and changed the way I view martial arts forever.

Do you have a favorite KKC story or experience you would like to share?
My favorite story involves one of my collegues, Sensei Michael. When I joined the Heroes Circle, he was still a student. But after a while, he wanted to earn his blackbelt and become an instructor. He joined my karate school and now has his second-degree blackbelt. To know how far he has come, and the challenges he faces daily, is truly amazing.

What would your superpower be and why?
I would like the power of time. I want to slow time, speed up time, and look into the past or future.

What do you do for fun?
I love to spend time with my family, and vacation on beaches. I also love to exercise, compete in 5ks and mud runs.
