School-Based Martial Arts Therapist

Are you looking to add purpose and meaning to your work as a Martial Artist? 

The Heroes Circle (HC), a division of Kids Kicking Cancer (KKC) is looking to hire two (2x) part-time or one (1x) full-time school-based Martial Arts Therapist(s). 

This position will include: 

  • Working with elementary and middle school students in the Oak Park Michigan School District during the school day during the months of March – June 2023 and September – October 2023.  
  • Working with pediatric patients and families in various settings, including in-person (or virtual) training in class, hospital, and one-on-one session, March – October 2023. 

As a HC trained Martial Arts Therapist, you will teach breathing, visualization, and relaxation techniques, in addition to traditional martial arts moves, to help empower children and provide them with a sense of power, peace, and purpose. It is important for our martial artists to recognize our program is non-contact and not self-defense oriented. 

Martial Arts Therapists undergo extensive training in the meditative, breathing, and empowerment techniques used in the program. The curriculum work is followed by practical application and in-person (or virtual) training.

A Heroes Circle Martial Arts Therapist must: 

  • Provide an empathetic approach to children and families while consistently building trust as a kind and patient teacher. 
  • Utilize problem solving skills, approaching challenges with a positive, “can do” attitude. 
  • Be open to new techniques and technologies and be a team player. 
  • Be comfortable in a school-based and hospital-based environment, working with kids and people of all different backgrounds and abilities. 
  • Demonstrate self-initiative, honesty, and a strong work. 
  • Always hold a professional and respectful manner when interacting with school facility and administration, students, parents, school partners and other KKC staff 
  • Offer flexibility, availability, and sensitivity in meeting the needs of the school-based and ill pediatric populations. 

 
Requirements: 

  • Black Belt Certified Martial Artist. 
  • Experience teaching martial arts, preferably to children. 
  • Training or experience working in pediatric psychosocial support a plus. 
  • Basic computer skills, use or learn Microsoft systems, and virtual tools (ie. Zoom). 
  • Ability to work during school hours (8am – 3pm). 
  • Perfect for Martial Artists who own or work at a Martial Arts School during the late afternoon and evenings. 
  • All candidates are subject to a employment based background check upon hiring.  
  • HC requires its staff to be vaccinated for the flu and Covid-19. 

Salary: $30.00 – $35.00 per hour 

Work Location: Oak Park School System, Oak Park, Michigan and throughout Southeastern Michigan
