How many years have you worked with Kids Kicking Cancer?
5 years

How did you begin with martial arts?
I started my martial arts career in January of 2007, a month after we enrolled our six year old son in the program. I am currently holding the rank of Sa Dan, a fourth degree black belt in Taekwondo. And my son is still practicing as well!

What lessons have you learned over the years from practicing or teaching martial arts?
I have learned SO MUCH! I think my biggest take away would be patience, mostly in learning and practicing myself. Learning is hard for me, so I am very particular about how I like to teach and explain in detail.

What inspired you to join Kids Kicking Cancer (KKC) as a martial arts therapist?
Everything about this organization inspired me to join KKC as a Martial Arts Therapist! I love martial arts and I love working with children. To work with the children of KKC’S Heroes Circle though… that is the cherry on top. How blessed am that I get to learn from these amazing children?!?!

What do you love most about Kids Kicking Cancer’s mission?
I love that we empower children, we give them an outlet for their fears and frustrations and that we teach them pain is a message they don’t have to listen to. Also, that they have a purpose too… to teach the world!!

Do you have a favorite KKC story or experience you would like to share?
So many! In general, I love hearing from the kids that they have used their Martial Arts Meditative Techniques (their body scan or their power breathing) during a rough time and that it helped calm them.

How do you promote respect within the classroom?
I like to promote a mutual respect. Saying yes sir, yes ma’am. Listening while someone is talking and not interrupting.

What do you do for fun?
I like to spend time with my family. I like to work out. Go for a run or take a long walk. Go to the beach and look for sea glass. In the summer I raise monarch butterflies (from egg all the way to chrysalis stage). Last summer I released 167 monarch butterflies! This year my goal is 250 butterflies! 😃🐛🦋😍
